Shocking images purportedly showing the beheading of an American journalist by Islamic State militants have been released online tonight.
Reporter James Foley was kidnapped by unidentified gunmen in Syria two years ago.
This evening insurgents belonging to the group previously known as ISIS released a video via social media sites called "A Message To America".
It shows a man, claimed to be Mr Foley, on his knees next to a masked rebel, before he is beheaded.
Reuters said it could not immediately verify the footage.
A Twitter account set up by his family to help find him said tonight: "We know that many of you are looking for confirmation or answers. Please be patient until we all have more information, and keep the Foleys in your thoughts and prayers."
The Find James Foley website says James disappeared while in northwest Syria on November 22 2012.
The oldest of five children, he had been working as a reporter in the Middle East for five years and had previously worked as a teacher.
Islamic State’s sweep through northern Iraq, bringing it close to Baghdad and in control of the second city, Mosul, drew US air strikes on the country for the first time since the end of the American occupation in 2011.
The Sunni militant group has declared a caliphate in parts of Iraq and Syria in areas it controls.
