Thug jailed for biting chunk of girlfriend's ear off - after watching England World Cup loss

Brutal: David Barr bit his girlfriend Gemma Dykins's ear in a savage attack
A thug who bit part of his girlfriend’s ear off after watching England lose their first World Cup match against Italy has been jailed.
David Barr went berserk following the national team’s 2-1 defeat in Brazil, punching, kicking and strangling Gemma Dykins so badly that she thought she was going to die.

The 38-year-old was put behind bars today for six years after Mold Crown Court heard how the use of ‘the shod of his foot and his teeth was akin to using weapons.’

Brutal Attack: Gemma Dykins, 29, had a bit a chunk out of her left ear by vicious David Barr
Barr flew into a rage on June 14 at his home in Mold, north Wales, after believing Ms Dykins was contacting another man on her mobile phone.
The local magazine editor quickly became jealous, grabbed her phone and followed her into the kitchen where the assault began.
Later, the couple told medics in hospital that she got her injuries by falling over their pet dog.

Nasty Attack: Barr, 38, attacked his girlfriend after watching England lose their first World Cup match
Prosecutor Gareth Roberts said: “He punched her hard to the left side of her face, she hit her head on the tiled floor and lost consciousness.
“The defendant shouted at her and called her names. He punched her to the side of the face again, he knelt down over her and bit her left ear, she felt a sharp pain and there was a lot of blood.
“Barr put his hand around her neck and started to strangle her. She could not breathe and she genuinely thought that he was going to kill her.
“The defendant picked her up and put her on the sofa. She fell in and out of consciousness, she was unable to walk and she believed that the defendant thought that he had killed her and appeared to calm down. He removed the keys from the back door.”

Deathly Afraid: Gemma thought she was going to die during the attack
Ms Dykins was left with extensive bruising to her face and body, part of her left ear was bitten off and she had a hairline fracture of the jaw. She now faces re-constructive surgery.
Judge Philip Hughes told Barr, who admitted a charge of grievous bodily harm: “She could not breathe and thought she was going to die."
Barr, from Aberystwyth, felt “deep shame, guilt and remorse,” his barrister Damian Sabino claimed.
