A man was shot in the head and about 50 others were injured when rival gangs clashed in Calais as they fought for the right to smuggle themselves to Britain .
About 300 East African migrants armed with rocks, knives and iron bars fought in running battles close to the ferry port.
One was badly hurt and airlifted to hospital after being hit with a powerful air rifle.
Three others were seriously injured.
Riot police first broke up a fight at a food distribution centre on Monday evening but the carnage continued through the night.
A police source said: “It was the second night of violence.
"Hundreds were involved in a mass brawl overnight and riot control officers were brought in from the surrounding area.”
About 650 refugees have set up makeshift camps at the port as they attempt to cross the Channel illegally.
The feuding Somalian and Eritrean gangs were said to be fighting over territory and the chance to sneak on British-bound lorries.
