Mum arrested on suspicion of child neglect after toddler falls from first floor window

Tragic: The girl fell from the window onto an elderly man then the pavement
A mum has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect after a toddler fell from a first floor window suffering serious injuries.
The little girl, aged 18 months, fell 15 feet from the window above a row of shops and onto the pavement in Rainham, Kent, this morning.

Tonight she is Kings' College Hospital being treated for serious head and chest injuries.
An eyewitness told how she initially mistook the falling child for a doll.
Becky Zacharow, 18, said: "It was about 8.10am and I was on the way to the train station on the way to work.
"I turned the corner and saw an elderly man coming out the shop with his paper and some milk and then I just saw a white blur coming down."
The toddler hit an awning then fell onto the man and hit him on the arm before falling to the pavement.
Becky, who works at Howden Broking Group in London, said: “She had a long white baby gown on and she had a blond bowl hair cut. I just thought it was a doll.
"When she was coming down she was just spinning.
"I went over and what I thought was this doll just started screaming and I realised it was a baby.
"I was holding her so that her head was in my shoulder and I could see that she was bleeding.
"I put her in a cradle position. I grabbed some tissue and started wiping her face. When I was talking to her she was focusing on me."
Becky said the baby "seemed to know what was going on" but was clearly very badly hurt.
The toddler’s 30-year-old mother has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect and is being questioned by detectives tonight at a police station.
The auntie of the 18-month-old girl who fell from the window described the incident as "every mother’s worst nightmare".

Harrowing: A witness thought the little girl was a doll when she saw her fall

The woman, who asked not to be named, said: "The girl is just 18 months old.
"My brother is the father but he doesn’t have anything to do with the pair of them, he hasn’t met her.
"I wasn’t aware of the incident until later on in the day.
"The mother lives in the flats on her own and is a single mum, there is still a forensic team here taking pictures, they have been here all day.
"I am in total shock.
"I don’t know how the two of them are, but I heard my niece is undergoing an operation at the moment and we hope she can pull through."
A Kent Police spokesman said: "A 30-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect while investigations continue into the full circumstances of this incident.
"She’s currently being questioned at a police station outside London."
The spokesman said he was unaware of the child’s condition, only that she was ‘receiving treatment in hospital.”
A spokeswoman for Kings’ College Hospital was unable to give an updated description of her medical status and said all inquiries are being dealt with by Kent Police.
